The Dark Manual - Sunny

The Dark Manual

Planting seeds often leads to unexpected blossoms.

Many years ago, I had the opportunity to design the cover art for the book “The Dark Manual” by Japan-based award-winning writer Colin O’Sullivan. At the time, I could never have imagined that this book would eventually be adapted into a full TV show on Apple TV+.

The show, now titled Sunny, is a darkly comedic drama starring Rashida Jones. The plot centers around Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. She is left living with a robot named Sunny, which was created by her husband.

Of course, the TV show didn’t keep the original artwork, but it’s still incredibly rewarding to see a project I was once a part of evolve into something so significant, even from a distance.

In an artistic career, it’s important to plant as many seeds as early as possible because you never know which ones will grow and into what kind of flower. This development is a thrilling reminder of that truth.

I’m excited to watch the first episode tonight!
